Change Your World is a social enterprise that comprises of young people like myself from different backgrounds with a sole purpose- to fight modern day slavery through creative awareness programs and safe action plans.
Project Liber8 was the first Change Your World event that i attended. I won tickets to the event, and decided to go for the event as it was for a good cause, which was to raise awareness about human trafficking. The 4 hour event made me realize that I am very fortunate to have parents that are very concerned about my safety, and opened my eyes to the seriousness of human trafficking in the world today.
Human trafficking is an umbrella term to describe the millions of people enslaved annually, also known as modern day slavery. Europe is the destination for victims from the widest range of destinations, while victims from Asia are trafficked to the widest range of destinations. The reason why human trafficking is widely practiced is because it is a very lucrative industry, with an estimated $32 billion per year in international trade, with trafficking of women for sexual exploitation, forced labor, children and organs being the most popular forms of human trafficking.
I'm sure everyone knows what human trafficking is, but fail to see the detrimental impact it has on everyone. Sure, we have heard of human trafficking being the norm in countries like Cambodia or Brazil, but in actual fact, it happens in Malaysia. A small number of Malaysian citizens are reportedly trafficked abroad to Singapore, Japan and China for commercial sexual exploitation, and most of them come from rural and indigenous communities. Human trafficking deprives people of their human rights and freedoms, it is a global
health risk, and it fuels the growth of organized crime. Furthermore, victims of human trafficking undergo physical and emotional abuse, as well as death. The impact of human trafficking goes beyond individual victims; it undermines the security and safety of all countries linked to it.
Anyone can contribute towards this cause by being alert in this locality and ensuring that safety is the main priority. We have reached a point where eradicating human trafficking is no longer limited to a few organizations. Anyone can help reduce this condition, it just depends on whether we are willing to take that first step.
